Angier Goodwin
Angier Louis Goodwin (born January 30, 1881 in Fairfield , Somerset County , Maine , † June 20, 1975 in Melrose , Massachusetts ) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1955 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Angier Goodwin attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1902 the Colby College in Waterville . After a subsequent law degree at Harvard University and his admission to the bar in 1906, he began to work in this profession in Boston . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1912 and 1914 and again from 1916 to 1920 he was a member of the Melrose Parish Council, of which he was President in 1920. From 1921 to 1923 he also served as mayor there. During the First World Warhe was a member of the Massachusetts National Guard and Legal Adviser to the Enlistment Board. From 1923 to 1925 he was a member of the Melrose Planning Committee. At the same time he was there also a member of the Board of Appeals . Between 1925 and 1928 Goodwin was a member of the House of Representatives from Massachusetts ; from 1929 to 1941 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1941 he served as its president. In 1942 he was chairman of the State Commission on Administration and Finance of the State of Massachusetts .
In the 1942 congressional election , Goodwin was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Arthur Daniel Healey on January 3, 1943 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1955 . His time in Congress saw the end of World War II , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the beginning of the civil rights movement .
In 1954, Goodwin was not re-elected. From 1955 to 1960 he was a member of the Massachusetts Tax Appeal Committee. After that, he retired. He died in Melrose on June 20, 1975.
