William M. Richardson
William Merchant Richardson (born January 4, 1774 in Pelham , Hillsborough County , New Hampshire Colony , † March 15, 1838 in Chester , New Hampshire ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1811 and 1814 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Richardson attended Harvard University until 1797 . After a subsequent law degree and his license to practice law in 1804, he began to work in this profession in Groton (Massachusetts). At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . After the resignation of MP Joseph Bradley Varnum , Richardson was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on November 4, 1811 when the by-election was due for the fourth seat of Massachusetts . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on April 18, 1814 . During this time the British-American War of 1812 fell .
In 1814, Richardson moved to Portsmouth , New Hampshire, where he became a federal attorney. From 1816 he was presiding judge of the New Hampshire Supreme Court . He held this office until his death on March 15, 1838 in Chester. His nephew William Adams Richardson (1821-1896) also became a politician and was US Treasury Secretary from 1873 to 1874 .
