Pehr G. Holmes

Pehr Gustaf Holmes (born April 9, 1881 in Mölnbacka , Värmland , Sweden , †  December 19, 1952 in Venice , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1931 and 1947 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1886 Pehr Holmes came to Worcester , Massachusetts, with his parents from his Swedish homeland . He attended the public schools there and then worked in the craft. He later also worked in banking and insurance. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1908 and 1911 and again from 1913 to 1926 he was a member of the Worcester ward council or the council of elders. He served as Mayor of Worcester between 1917 and 1919. From 1925 to 1928 he was a member of the governor's advisory staff .

In the 1930 congressional election , Holmes was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded George R. Stobbs on March 4, 1931 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1947 . The New Deal laws of the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt were passed there since 1933 , which Holmes' party was rather hostile to. Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences.

In 1946, Holmes was not re-elected. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked in the field of electroplating . He died in Venice on December 19, 1952.
