Nathan Read

Nathan Read (born July 2, 1759 in Warren , Worcester County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  January 20, 1849 in Belfast , Maine ) was an American politician . Between 1800 and 1803 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nathan Read attended the public schools of his home country and then studied at Harvard University until 1781 . He then taught in Beverly and Salem as a teacher. He then taught at Harvard until 1787. He later opened a pharmacy in Salem. He was also involved in an ironworks in Danvers . In 1791 Read was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Politically, he became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton in the late 1790s .

After the resignation of MP Samuel Sewall , Read was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives at the due by-election for the tenth seat of Massachusetts, where he took up his new mandate on November 25, 1800. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1803 . In 1802 Read decided not to run again for Congress. The following year he became a judge on the Essex County Court of Appeals . From 1807 he lived in Belfast, what is now Maine, where he served as a district judge in Hancock County . Nathan Read died on January 20, 1849 near Belfast, where he was also buried.
