Benjamin Orr (politician)

Benjamin Orr (born December 1, 1772 in Bedford , Hillsborough County , New Hampshire Colony , †  September 3, 1828 in Brunswick , Maine ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Benjamin Orr acquired the necessary elementary school knowledge himself; then he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter. He also worked as a teacher in the meantime. Until 1798 he studied at Dartmouth College in Hanover . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1801, he began to work in this profession in Brunswick. In the same year he moved his residence and his law firm to Topsham , also in what was then the Maine district of Massachusetts. Orr was also a board member at Bowdoin College . From 1814 to 1828 he was the curator of this school. In 1815 and 1816 he was also responsible for the finances of Bowdoin College.

Politically, Orr was a member of the Federalist Party . In the congressional elections of 1816 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th  electoral district of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Benjamin Brown on March 4, 1817 . Since he refused to run again in 1818, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1819 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Benjamin Orr practiced as a lawyer again. From 1822 he lived again in Brunswick, where he died on September 3, 1828.
