Selwyn Z. Bowman
Selwyn Zadock Bowman (born May 11, 1840 in Charlestown , Massachusetts , † September 30, 1928 in Framingham , Massachusetts) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1883 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Selwyn Bowman attended public schools in his home country. In 1855 he moved to Somerville with his parents . He then studied at Harvard University until 1860 . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his admission to the bar in 1863, he began to work in this profession in Boston . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1870, 1871, and 1875 . He then sat in the State Senate from 1876 to 1877 . In the meantime he acted as the legal representative of the city of Somerville between 1872 and 1873.
In the congressional election of 1878 Bowman was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Massachusetts , where he succeeded Nathaniel Prentiss Banks on March 4, 1879 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1883 . In 1882 he was not re-elected. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Bowman practiced as a lawyer in Somerville. From 1888 to 1897 he was again the legal representative of this city. In 1914 he moved to Cohasset . At the same time he worked as a lawyer in Boston. He died in Framingham on September 30, 1928.
