Obernberg Castle

The Castle upper mountain is a mountain castle in the same community in Ried im Innkreis District of Upper Austria .

history

The first castle complex was built by the Counts of Formbach in the 10th century ( Upper Castle ). They had the castle administered by a burgrave . A Meginhart de Obernberge is attested from the year 1160. Obernberg was ceded to the Diocese of Passau in 1191 by the Counts of Formbach and their successors, the Counts of Andechs . Bishop Wolfker had Obernberg expanded into an almost impregnable fortress from 1199–1202. In 1241 the Muhringer (Meinhard von Mörringen) attacked from Eberschwang Veste and Markt Obernberg. Duke Friedrich II of Austria was able to take the castle in 1243 after a siege by treason. The castle hat was transferred to Count Ulrich and Wernhart von Schaunberg. In 1245 they were able to withstand a six-week siege by Passau Bishop Rüdiger , who was allied with Duke Otto of Bavaria . In 1246 Duke Friedrich returned the castle to the Diocese of Passau, which was then occupied by Duke Otto. When Otto von Lonsdorf was elected the new bishop of Passau, the castle fell back to Passau and remained with the diocese until secularization in 1803. In 1368 a great fire broke out in Obernberg. Obernberg was pledged to Bavaria in 1368, in 1372 it was pledged to the Archdiocese of Salzburg for four years after an attack by Reichker von Riedenberg and Zacharias Haderer , and in 1388 it went to Duke Albrecht III for some time. and in 1411 it was pledged to the Ezzelin Count von Ortenburg . A Kuchler who administered Obernberg around 1427 introduced a toll in 1466.

In 1550, Bishop Count Wolfgang von Salm had a new building built here as a residential and office building for the respective caretaker . His coat of arms with the year 1550 is attached above the gate; the inscription reads "1550. Daminus videbit. WEPCA SALM ”(i.e. Wolfgang episcopus Passaviensis, Count von Salm). During the War of the Spanish Succession , Obernberg was occupied by Bavarian troops in 1701. In the peasant uprising of 1705, the market was taken by the rebels.

In 1782 Obernberg came to Austria, but the Diocese of Passau still remained the landlord. After secularization, Obernberg was ceded to Austria. An Austro-Hungarian land and maintenance court has now been set up in the castle.

In 1807 a number of buildings were changed, including the still existing Gothic keep was demolished. In 1848 the regional court became a district court and in 1850 an imperial and royal district court. Today there is an art house at Castle Obernberg.

Obernberg Castle today

The castle stands on a bank terrace sloping steeply towards the Inn . The foreground is still separated by a deep moat. Today there are two structurally not related buildings with the remains of a curtain wall into which a postern is embedded. A falconry is currently housed here. Two round towers have been preserved on the north and west sides , the large tower, the east and south walls with buildings, gate tower and drawbridge have been removed. The previously existing neck ditch has been filled in using the demolition material; today only two shallow depressions can be seen.

One of the buildings is the office and court house built in 1550. The isolated transverse building made of tuff is much older, it is the attested box ( Zehenthaus , granary , silo), which in 1912 became an official residence and is now used as an art gallery . There is also a 63 m deep well shaft , which has been renovated and thus optically integrated into the site. Today there is a lawn between the two buildings, which somewhat blurs the formerly very defensive character of the complex. A promenade path (Bischof Wolfker Weg) led around the building with a view of the Inn. Only the right path towards Mautnerstiege remained accessible after a landslide and the naturalization.
