County of Formbach

The county of Formbach , named Vornbach in recent research , was a medieval county with the main town of Vornbach (today part of Neuhaus am Inn ) near Passau .

The county had existed for at least the 10th century in the hands of a family who exercised rulership rights in Traungau . Around 1050 the county seat was moved a few kilometers up the Inn. In the following years the county was therefore called Neuburg .

The family of the Counts of Formbach founded the Vornbach (Formbach) monastery in 1094 and died in 1158 with Ekbert III. from Neuburg. The goods were mainly inherited by the Counts of Andechs and the Otakare .

The Counts of Formbach were related and related by marriage to the Luitpolders , the Brunones and the Wettins ; In addition to the Traungau, they ruled for a time in Schweinachgau and Künziggau , they were also bailiffs of the diocese of Regensburg , the monasteries of Göttweig and St. Nikola near Passau.
