The genus Lacerta , sometimes referred to as the collar lizards , was originally the most diverse group of forms among the real lizards (Lacertidae). It occurs in Europe and the neighboring regions of Northwest Africa and the Middle East.

The phylogenetic relationships and thus the taxonomy of the genus Lacerta , but also of the entire Lacertidae family, are controversial among experts. The systematic separation of the wall lizards as a separate genus Podarcis was initially established . As a consequence, however, the rest of the genus Lacerta has to be further dissolved, which has meanwhile become established in the literature. The group of green lizards remains the only one in the genus Lacerta s. st.
