The Northwest Anatolian Lizard ( Anatololacerta anatolica ) belongs to the real lizards .
features
The Northwest Anatolian Lizard is a solidly built and medium-sized lizard. It reaches a total length of about 24 centimeters. The head is narrow. The small back scales are not keeled. The top is brownish or brownish-gray in color. The flanks appear darker than the back, as they have dark brown spots, some of which merge like a mesh pattern. Light spots with a dark edge can occasionally be present on the back and flanks. The underside is whitish in color and pale. In adult specimens, the throat is bright orange to brick red or whitish in color. The throats of young animals, however, are whitish. The tails of the young are turquoise blue.
Occurrence
The species occurs from above sea level to altitudes of 1700 meters above sea level. It prefers to colonize rocky and well-vegetated habitats. The Northwest Anatolian Lizard can also be found in human environments such as gardens, villages and ruins.
Way of life
There is little information about the way of life of the Northwest Anatolian lizard. The females lay a clutch of 3 to 8 eggs in summer.
Systematics
There are two subspecies:
- Anatololacerta anatolica ssp. aegaea has a bright, wide longitudinal stripe on both sides, which runs from the head along the trunk at the boundary between the flanks and back to the tail. The strip can have interruptions. This subspecies occurs on the Dilek Peninsula in Turkey and on the Greek island of Samos .
- Anatololacerta anatolica ssp. anatolica is the nominate form . The longitudinal stripe consists only of teardrop-shaped spots. It can be found in the northern Aegean region in north-west Turkey.

The species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN .
