biography
Through his father, he came into contact with reptiles and amphibians at the age of six. His subsequent studies were supported by George Albert Boulenger and Oskar Böttger . In 1890 he was awarded a doctorate in Vienna. After a year in Leipzig, he began teaching at the Institute for Zoology at the University of Vienna . From 1919 to 1933 he was a professor at the same institute.
In addition to his research in the field of herpetology, which was reflected in more than 550 publications, he had his own scientific collection. He named numerous new species of reptiles , amphibians and arthropods , the latter especially orthoptera and scorpions .
In 1931 he published the textbook Third Class of the Craniota: third and at the same time last class of Ichthyopsida: Amphibia, Lurche: general introduction to the natural history of Amphibia and in 1910 the textbook Amphibians and Reptiles .
Werner described among other things the frog family Leptodactylidae Werner, 1896 , and numerous species, including the South American Froschlurch Pristimantis appendiculatus (as Eleutherodactylus appendiculatus Werner, 1894 ), the Lebanese viper ( Montivipera bornmuelleri as Vipera bornmuelleri Werner, 1898 ), the Palestine viper ( Vipera Palaestinae Werner , 1938 ) and the Cycladic viper ( Macroypena schweizeri , as Vipera lebetina schweizeri Werner, 1935 ). He first described 107 species of reptiles. In 1904 he became a member of the Leopoldina .
