François Mocquard

François Mocquard (born October 27, 1834 in Leffond , Haute-Saône department , † March 19, 1917 ibid) was a French zoologist and herpetologist .

Live and act

François Mocquard studied physics in Besançon with a bachelor's degree in 1860 and licensed degrees in physics (1862) and mathematics (1865). He then studied medicine with his doctorate in 1873, having previously served as an officer (aide majeur) in the Franco-German War. Mocquard then taught physics and natural sciences at the Lyceum in Vesoul until 1877 , then went to Paris to the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in the laboratory of Alphonse Milne-Edwards and studied under this crustacean . In 1879 he received his diploma and he did his doctorate in 1884 at the Faculté des Sciences of Paris ( Sorbonne ) with the dissertation Recherches anatomiques sur l'estomac des crustacés podophtalmaires on the digestive system of crustaceans. From 1884 he was assistant to Léon Vaillant at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris, professor of reptiles and fish. Fernand Angel (1881–1950) was one of his students there . In 1908 he retired, but continued to be an honorary scientist at the museum.

The French civil engineer and explorer Maurice Armand Chaper (1834-1896) traveled the west of the island of Borneo from November 1890 to January 1891 , the amphibians and reptiles collected from the Kalimantan region were evaluated in the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle by Mocquard. Mocquard also worked on reptiles and amphibians from Mexico, Central America, Tonkin, California and Madagascar.

He first described 61 species of reptiles.

He was a Knight of the Legion of Honor.
