Clément Fernand Angel (born February 2, 1881 in Douzy , Département Ardennes , † July 13, 1950 in the 14th arrondissement , Paris ), commonly known as Fernand Angel , was a French herpetologist and ichthyologist .

Life

Angel started working as an assistant taxidermist in 1905 under the direction of Léon Vaillant , professor of herpetology and ichthyology at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle . His mentors were François Mocquard , Vaillant's chief assistant from 1884 to 1908 and later George Albert Boulenger in London . One of his first tasks was the completion of the last panels for a reptile volume from the series Mission Scientifique au Mexique et dans l'Amérique Centrale (1870–1909) by Léon Vaillant, with which the other illustrations by Marie Firmin Bocourt , who died in 1904, were supplemented.

After Vaillant's departure in 1910, the following three professorships were ichthyologists and Angel became curator of the herpetological department until his death , except during the First and Second World Wars .

Angel's main focus was on the herpetofauna of Africa and Asia, especially the French colonies in West Africa , Madagascar and Indochina . Most of his specialist articles were devoted to systematics. In collaboration with Maxime Lamotte , he published a series of articles on the West African viviparous toad species Nimbaphrynoides occidentalis , for which Angel wrote the first scientific description in 1943 .

Several of Angel's writings were published posthumously by Maxime Lamotte and Jean Guibé between 1950 and 1954.

Angel has also made contributions to ichthyology, including Poissons provenant des campagnes du prince Albert Ier de Monaco (1933) with Louis Roule and Petit atlas des poissons. IV. Poissons des eaux douces. Espèces exotiques et d'ornement (1946) in collaboration with Jacques Géry .
