Alphonse Milne-Edwards

Alphonse Milne-Edwards (born October 13, 1835 in Paris , † April 21, 1900 ibid) was a French ornithologist , crustaceologist and naturalist.

Life

He was the son of the zoologist , crustaceologist, doctor and naturalist Henri Milne Edwards (1800-1885). Since the latter had a lot of siblings, he had his middle name Milne changed to part of his surname, but wrote himself without a hyphen ( Milne Edwards ). It was only Alphonse Milne-Edwards who then added a hyphen to his family name. Milne-Edwards was trained as a doctor and then worked as his father's assistant. In 1865 he became a professor at the École de Pharmacie de Paris and in 1876 took over his father's post as professor of ornithology and head of the department of mammals and birds at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle . There he became a specialist in bird fossils and marine research and was promoted to director in 1891. Among other things, he studied fossil crustaceans at the museum and published many works that reproduce the diversity and morphology of decapods - especially crabs (Brachyura) and medium- sized crabs (Anomura) - from research expeditions on ships such as Travailleur , Talisman and Blake . In 1879 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences and in 1885 a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg . In 1886 he became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

After the death of Milne-Edwards, Jean-Frédéric Émile Oustalet (1844–1905) took over the post of director of the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle.

Taxonomic revision of the giant panda bear

Jean Pierre Armand David (1826–1900) is considered to be the first to describe the giant panda bear in 1869 and named it Ursus melanoleucus . He classified him in the genus of real bears ( Ursus ). About a year later, Milne-Edwards revised David's decision and put the giant panda bear in its own new genus, Ailuropoda , because in his opinion there were too many differences from bears of the genus Ursus . Since then, the scientific name of the giant panda has been Ailuropoda melanoleuca after grammatical adaptation of the epithet . The giant panda bear previously shared the genus Ailuropoda with the now extinct dwarf panda ( Ailuropoda minor ).
