The Travailleur was (1863-1885) a French research ship. It was under the nautical direction of the naval lieutenants, lieutenant de vaisseau Ernest Richard and J. Parfait and the scientific direction of Alphonse Milne-Edwards (1835-1900).

The ship

The ship, a paddle steamer with auxiliary sails, was 47 m long with a displacement of 829 tons ( ship dimensions ). It was powered by a steam engine with an output of 150 hp (110.32 kW). Since the coal supply for the operation of the steam engine was only limited and only lasted about a week, it was also possible to navigate under sail. From 1870 to 1871 it was in Toulon, later from 1871 to 1890 in Rochefort (Charente-Maritime) , where it was also scrapped in 1895. The permanent crew consisted of 85 seamen.

Rides

The Travailleur was first transferred from Rochefort (Charente-Maritime) to Bayonne . On July 17, 1880, the expedition then started from Bayonne and led into the Bay of Biscay . The crew, including the scientific staff, consisted of 145 men. The scientists included u. a. Alphonse Milne-Edwards , Léopold de Folin (1817–1896), Léon Vaillant (1834–1914). On this first expedition, the Travailleur kept a parallel course to the south coast of the Bay of Biscay, to about 70 miles east of Santander in Spain, then returned to Bayonne , where the expedition ended on August 1, 1880. The most important tasks of this short trip were to test the equipment and capabilities of the ship in order to then explore the deep sea on the following expeditions. Shortly after the end of this first expedition, Alphonse Milne-Edwards published his short report of his zoological exploration in the Bay of Biscay on board the research vessel Travailleur , Compte rendu sommaire d'une exploration zoologique faite dans le Golfe de Gascogne a bord du navire in mid-August 1880 de l'Etat le Travailleuran to the Académie des sciences . As a result, explored Travailleur the Deep Sea (1881 1880, 1882) of the Bay of Biscay, the coastal region ahead of Portugal (1881, 1882), the Mediterranean (1881) and the eastern Atlantic Ocean from the Bay of Biscay to the south of the Canary Islands ( 1882). In 1883 the Travailleur was replaced by the larger ship Talisman .
