Alexandre Guillaume de Léopold, Marquis de Folin (* 1817 in Tournus , † 1896 in Biarritz ) was a French naval officer, oceanographer , zoologist and especially malacologist .

Life

L. de Folin was the son of Charles Louis de Folin (* 1783), his mother Caroline de Truchis de Lays (* 1795).

Léopold de Folin began his career as a naval officer. In 1866 L. de Folin was Commandant du port de Pauillac , near Bordeaux , then in Saint-Nazaire and finally harbor master, capitaine de port , in Bayonne . He can be considered the initiator of the first oceanographic research in France. He had convinced the French authorities, Ministres de la Marine et de l'Instruction publique , to carry out the first scientific investigation with the research vessel Travailleur from 1880 to 1882 into the depths of the Bay of Biscay , the Gulf of Gascogne , and the Mediterranean Sea below scientific direction by Alphonse Milne-Edwards . In 1883 aboard the Talisman for expeditions to the Azores , Canary Islands and Cape Verde Islands . In 1871 he was the founder of the Musée de la Mer de Biarritz . Léopold de Folin wrote reports on Caecidae (microscopic sea snails) that he collected during the HMS Challenger expedition from 1872 to 1876. He also described the genus Oceanida of sea snails in the family Eulimidae .

He was the brother-in-law of the naturalist Pierre Marie Arthur Morelet (1809-1892), who married his sister Noémie de Folin.

Honor taxon

The marine snail genus Folinella was named after de Folin.
