The Wiesenburg castle ruins , also known as Weissenburg , are the ruins of a castle in the municipality of Niederwerrn in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt in Bavaria .

history

When the Wiesenburg castle was founded cannot be determined exactly. According to the Niederwerrner Chronik, "the castle" stood in Niederwerrn in 1252. With the castle, Niederwerrn is mentioned for the first time on June 17, 1137.

According to the historian Gerhard Bach, the castle was built in 1236 at the earliest, presumably on behalf of the Diocese of Würzburg , afterwards it was owned by various knight families such as the Lords of Wenkheim and on April 14, 1420 it passed into the possession of the von Münster family (“their claims enforce the Niederwerrner Castle ”).

In 1525 the castle was destroyed in the Palatinate Peasants' War and rebuilt in the 16th century. Today you can only find the remainder of a round corner tower of the former castle complex. The Burgplatz is now a ground monument .
