Marktsteinach Castle or Veste Steynach , also known as Nordecke Castle , is the ruin of a castle at the northern end of Marktsteinach (main street), a district of the municipality of Schonungen in the Schweinfurt district in Bavaria .
history
The “Veste Steynach” built in the valley floor of the village was first mentioned in a document on July 8, 1151 and later went with the market and the land “Steinaha” from the Count of Henneberg to Bishop Eberhard II of Bamberg . In 1239 the castle was first listed as the Würzburg collegiate fief of the Henneberg family. The lords of Steinach, 1356 to 1407 the lords of Wenkheim and from 1407 to 1490 the lords of Eberstein are named as further fiefdoms . During the Eberstein era, the castle lost its importance, as described in the Marktsteinach Chronicle: "an episcopal Würzburg state fortress to protect the merchant trains moving to the city against huge highwaymen". The servants of the Eberstein family became rabble-rousers, which prompted Bishop Gottfried von Würzburg to "move out towards Marktsteinach on Tuesday Praxedis, July 21st," in 1450 with 5000 men and in October 1450 to destroy large parts of the castle.
In 1525, in the course of the Peasants' War, many Marktsteinach citizens joined the rebellious group and destroyed the castle, which was not rebuilt afterwards. After 1806 the remains of the castle came to the Kingdom of Bavaria and in 1873 it was sold into private ownership.
description
The remains of the castle, which is also called Burg Nordecke because of its location in the village , are now integrated into the local village development. The castle had five towers , a dungeon with dungeon , a palace and a knight apartment with bower and a Knight's Hall . Parts of the curtain wall , remains of the tower, vaulted cellars, the eastern round tower stump and the remains of the surrounding moat have been preserved .
