geography

Marktsteinach is 9 km (as the crow flies) northeast of Schweinfurt and 4 km northeast of Schonungen. The village lies in a basin of the Steinach , which flows into the Main at Schonungen . Along its course there are several mills between Schonungen and Marktsteinach, which today serve as residential buildings. At the exit of the village in the direction ofaken Löffelsterz is the approx. 1 ha large village lake. 2 km north is the 403 m high Siebenkohlplatte.

history

The first documentary mention comes from the year 838, when Marktsteinach was transferred to the Fulda monastery . The village was the seat of the Lords of Steinach, who built Marktsteinach Castle in the valley floor . The "Veste Steynach" was owned by the Counts of Henneberg in the 13th century and then passed, like the entire village, to the Bishop of Würzburg. During the Peasants' War in the 16th century, the fortress Steynach was destroyed and never rebuilt. The still existing tower stump stands between residential properties on the main street. The ruin is a listed building. Furthermore, Marktsteinach was the seat of a central court . The parish of St. Bartholomew is more than 400 years old. In 1612, the church tower was raised on behalf of Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn , and the nave was rebuilt two years later. Mentioned for the first time around 1500 is the chapel "To the wretched saints" outside the town limits on the mountain called "Kolben". In 1554 during the Second Margrave War , the chapel was destroyed, in 1881 a pilgrimage chapel was built again, which was expanded to include a Lourdes grotto in 1900 and a Stations of the Cross with 14 stations in 1911.

In 1968 the foundation stone for a new church was laid. The sacristy of the old church was connected to the entrance hall of the new church. In 1969 the new church was consecrated.

On May 1, 1978, Marktsteinach was incorporated into the community of Schonungen.

Parish Church of St. Bartholomew

The church stands in the center of Marktsteinach between the former school and the connected new church in 1968. The parish Marktsteinach already in 1569 at the behest of Bishop Friedrich von Wirsberg the parish Löffelsterz as Filialkirche awarded. What the church looked like at that time is not known. It is certain that the church tower was raised in 1612. Two years later the nave was rebuilt, and the church was given the “ Julius style” typical of the founder of the rebuilding, Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn .

The nave is a simple, rectangular building with two window axes. The square choir has a groin vault . The choir tower has pointed arched openings, the windows of the nave are wide, in three parts and decorated with post-Gothic tracery. On the south portal is Julius Echter's coat of arms, dated 1615. The octagonal baptismal font of the church, made of sandstone, is one year younger.

Inside there is a high altar in rococo style , which was probably made between 1740 and 1750. The altarpiece, the tabernacle and the statues of Saints Kilian and Boniface date from the 19th century. The two side altars on the east wall also date from the Rococo. The paintings on both altars are by Johann Peter Herrlein . The painting on the left shows the Assumption of Mary, the painting on the right shows the martyrdom of Bartholomew , to whom the church is consecrated. The organ dates from 1731 and is the work of the Würzburg organ builder Johann Philipp Seuffert . Under the gallery there is a remnant of the choir stalls of the former Benedictine church in Obertheres, dated 1720 . The pews were also taken over from Obertheres.
