The castle ruins Stoll Castle is the ruins of a hilltop castle at 442.9 meters on the 476 meter high Stollberg , franc highest vineyard , on the district Handthal, district of the market Oberschwarzach in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt in Bavaria .

history

The castle was probably built in the 12th century by the Lords of Stollberg and was donated to Ebrach Monastery by the Würzburg Monastery in 1151 .

According to the thesis of local historian Gerhard Wagner, the minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide was born around 1170 on the Stollburg.

During a feud with the Würzburg bishop Hermann von Lobdeburg in 1236 Ludwig von Stollberg was slain by Würzburg horsemen, the castle came to the Würzburg monastery in 1237 and in 1303 became the seat of a Würzburg bailiff .

On 2 May 1525, the castle was in the Peasants' War destroyed and burnt, while the bailiff, Count of Castell , according Würzburg was called to the Marienberg fortress to defend against the rebellious peasants.

The castle belongs to the Spornburg type and is separated by four neck ditches from the ridge that slopes down on three sides.

From the former castle complex, now a ground monument , a 14 meter high remnant of the octagonal keep with walls up to 2.5 meters thick has been preserved. The castle ruins also show smaller remains of walls and vaults and a half-buried cellar entrance.
