Town hall and reed beds on the Gironde estuary

Pauillac [ po.jak ] is a French city on the Médoc peninsula near Bordeaux . Pauillac has 4841 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and has an area of 2539 hectares. About 900 hectares of this area are approved for viticulture. In the north the municipality borders on Saint-Estèphe , in the south on Saint-Julien-Beychevelle , both of which are also very famous wine-growing communities in the Médoc. Pauillac is 48 kilometers northwest of Bordeaux. The inhabitants are called Pauillacais .

Pauillac is located on the Gironde estuary , has a port and a former oil refinery at its northern end. In this port, the prefabricated parts (wings, fuselage parts, rudder units) of the Airbus A 380 are reloaded from the ship Ville de Bordeaux onto flat barges. This is necessary in order to be able to transport the large hull parts under the “ Pont de pierre ” in Bordeaux.

Events

Marathon runners in Pauillac

The Médoc marathon , also known as "the longest marathon in the world", starts and ends in Pauillac every year on the first Saturday in September . The majority of the participants wear imaginative costumes. In addition to the sporting incentive, the fact that the route mainly leads through the vineyards makes the event an outstanding event for runners and spectators. Although the city of Pauillac advertises the "longest marathon in the world", the length of 42.195 km is exactly the norm. But in the castles, food does not only consist of fruit and carbohydrate-rich bites, but also of their own wine. Some runners zigzag across the route to their destination and unintentionally extend the route.

Warship Saint-Clément in memory of Clement of Rome

The Saint-Martin Roman Catholic Church was created from 1824 to 1829 according to designs by the architect Armand Corcelles and was inspired by Greek art. This building was built both with materials from an old, too small church and with those of the Saint Mambert de Rignac church, which was demolished in 1824. The sober west facade supports the octagonal bell tower with a large gable, which itself consists of two towers placed one on top of the other. The first tower contains three bells. Two of them date from 1784 and come from an old church. They are under monument protection. The third bell got a crack from being too strong during the liberation in 1945 and had to be re-cast. She was baptized on June 10, 1946 under the name Edouard Jeanne Victoire.

Inside the nave has eight Doric columns. In the choir, a semi-dome overlooks the baroque white marble altar. A canopy directly above the altar illuminates it. A boat hangs in the middle of the nave under the vault. It represents the warship Saint-Clément , donated by pilots and sailors from Pauillac on November 23, 1836: “In memory of Clement of Rome , Pope and patron saint of sailors, pilots, boatmen and aspirants of the Pauillac station, all Catholics. “In front of the back wall of the church is a platform supported by iron pillars. An organ case in the style of the 19th century stands there with a view of the nave. It consists of fifteen games. On the left side of the nave there is a wooden pulpit leaning against a column, which is itself surrounded by a double staircase. Facing the chair is a cross of Christ.

Pauillac wine region

The place is world famous for its wine - Pauillac is home to the most powerful drops of the Médoc, and indeed of the entire Bordelais . Three of the five first wines of the Médoc, the Premier Crus , belong to the AOC Pauillac area: the Châteaux Lafite-Rothschild , Latour and Mouton-Rothschild . There are also two Deuxièmes Grands Crus Classés , a Quatrième Grand Cru Classé and twelve Cinquièmes Grands Crus Classés . The wines from Pauillac are characterized by their high proportion of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety , which makes the wines very long-lasting, but also requires a few years of maturation: It is recommended not to open a Pauillac wine before it is five years old is. You can drink the wine earlier, but only then does the wine promise maximum enjoyment.

In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape varieties approved for viticulture are Cabernet Franc , Carménère , Merlot , Malbec and Petit Verdot .

Town twinning

Pauillac has been a twin town of the French community of Paulhac near Toulouse since 2003 .

Pullacher Platz in Pauillac

Pauillac has been linked to the Upper Bavarian municipality of Pullach in the Isar valley near Munich through a partnership since 1964 . After the Franco-German friendship treaty, the Elysée Treaty in 1963, Pauillac was one of the first parishes in France to officially seal a partnership with a German parish. Citizens of both municipalities now meet every year as part of the official municipal partnership. In the years with an even final number, the municipality of Pullach is the host; in the years with an uneven final number, the city of Pauillac looks after the Pullach guests. Following the official events, the respective hosts offer round trips in areas of southern France and Bavaria. A maypole was set up on Pullacher Platz in Pauillac, opposite the House of Tourism and Wines .
