Hourtin is a French municipality with 3506 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Gironde department in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . Hourtin is on an alternative route to the Via Turonensis , the northernmost Way of St. James through France .
geography
Hourtin is located on the peninsula west of the Gironde estuary, in the Médoc , about 60 kilometers northwest of Bordeaux , 25 kilometers west of Pauillac and 40 kilometers south of Soulac-sur-Mer . In the West Hourtin borders the Atlantic Ocean and shares with the neighboring village of Carcans one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in France, the Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans . A tourist complex of hotels, restaurants and a sailing boat harbor, which is now called Hourtin-Port, was built on the lake in the 1980s.
On the Atlantic coast, about twelve kilometers from the main town, is the seaside resort of Hourtin-Plage, which lies in the middle of the Forêt des Landes ("Heidewald"). The forest consists mainly of maritime pines . In addition to access to the sea, there are restaurants, surf schools and a large campsite with a water park. The coastal strip is called here Côte d'Argent ("Silver Coast"). The coast is very rich in mussels and oysters at this point. The abrasion and remains of the shells of these shellfish mixed with the sand over the millennia. As a result, with a certain incidence of light in the evening hours, the sand in the surf glistens like silver dust.
The place itself has sufficient infrastructure around the church with a post office, a few shops, doctors, etc. There is a market once a week, 3 times a week in the summer months. Hourtin was connected to the rail network until the 1960s. A small museum for modern art is housed in the newly renovated station building (built between 1854 and 1856).
Other localities of Hourtin are Contaut, Piqueyrot and Lachanau.
