Castelnau-de-Medoc is a French municipality with 4778 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Gironde department in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The place belongs to the canton Le Sud-Médoc .
geography
Castelnau-de-Médoc is located about 30 kilometers northwest of Bordeaux , in the Médoc countryside . Neighboring municipalities are: Avensan , Moulis-en-Médoc , Sainte-Hélène and Salaunes .
history
In the Middle Ages, the area was ruled by the Counts of Armagnac . The local high medieval castle was destroyed in 1789 and local houses were built with the stones from the ruins. Earlier place names such as Castel-Novo also come from this castle, the current place name dates from 1957.
