Saint-Estèphe wine region

→ Main article: Saint-Estèphe (wine region)

The place also marks the northernmost of the four local appellations for viticulture; the other local appellations of the Médoc are Pauillac , Saint-Julien and Margaux .

The most famous wineries of Saint-Estèphe are the large estates Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose , both located in the south near the border with the neighboring municipality of Pauillac . In addition to them, there are over a hundred other, mostly smaller, wineries.

The wines from Saint-Estèphe are generally found to be somewhat stronger and more severe than the other wines from the Médoc peninsula; Even the tiny climatic shifts of a few kilometers can be tasted in the wine. Many wineries therefore bring more of the Merlot grapes , which ripen earlier, into their wine mix, into the cuvées , which makes the wines rounder, more palatable and ready to drink earlier.

According to the Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 (see also the article Bordeaux wine (classification) ), Saint-Estèphe has 2 Deuxièmes Crus Classés (Château Montrose and Château Cos d'Estournel), a Troisième Grand Cru Classé ( Château Calon-Ségur ) , a Quatrième Grand Cru Classé ( Château Lafon-Rochet ) and a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé ( Château Cos Labory ).
