Avensan is a French commune in the department of Gironde in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine with 2,953 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Lesparre-Médoc and the canton of Le Sud-Médoc (until 2015: canton of Castelnau-de-Médoc ). The inhabitants are called Avensanais .
geography
Avensan is about 20 kilometers northwest of Bordeaux . Avensan is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Moulis-en-Médoc in the north and north-west, Soussans in the east and north-east, Margaux-Cantenac in the east, Arsac in the south-east, Saint-Aubin-de-Médoc in the south, Salaunes in the south-west and Castelnau-de- Médoc in the west.
The former route nationale 215 (today's D1215) runs through the municipality .
