history
The country had already been settled in Roman times, as the excavations at La Chapelle Saint-Siméon show. Over the centuries the land was washed away by ebb and flow. Only when a flood dam was built at the beginning of the 19th century made the area arable again. Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac lies on marshland that was removed from the Gironde estuary by building a dam. Polders with their typical drainage ditches shape the landscape. Only the flood of March 1937 broke the dam and flooded parts of the community.
The originally independent villages Jau, Dignac and Loirac had merged in 1851. The landmark of the place is the sandstone, 18 meter high lighthouse Phare de Richard . The piers with the shrimp fishermen below the lighthouse are also characteristic. The municipality belongs to the Médoc (Bas-Médoc). As far as the excessively moist soil conditions allow, viticulture is practiced to a lesser extent on fewer than 20 farms . About a kilometer above the lighthouse there is a small fishing port at a widened drainage ditch.
Population development
The population had risen continuously to 1275 until 1929 and has since decreased again.
