Culture and sights
In July 2012, Carcans first took part in the “Night of the Churches”, an event organized by the French Bishops' Conference . Special sights in the Saint-Martin church are a listed statue of the Apostle James from the 18th century and the sculpture of the head of John the Baptist from the 16th century. The head and whiskers of the Baptist are made of horsehair . The church of Carcans was first mentioned in the Middle Ages as ecclesia carcanno . From 1099 it belonged to the Sainte-Croix monastery in Bordeaux . From the 13th century the church served as an abbey church of a priory . It was probably located on one of the Camino de Santiago at that time . This is supported by the altar, the statue and, above all, a lay brotherhood that existed around 1661. The medieval church was demolished in the 19th century and replaced by a neo-Gothic building in 1869 .
