The place has 4914 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and an area of 214.02 km². The Lacanau-Océan district on the Atlantic coast , laid out at the beginning of the 20th century, with its beaches is particularly suitable for surfers. Three kilometers inland, separated from the Atlantic by the dunes and forest, lies Lac de Lacanau , one of the largest inland lakes in France. The inland town of Lacanau is also located on this lake.
The dunes in the Lacanau area are up to 66 m high, and in the nearby Arcachon there is even the highest dune in Europe ( Dune du Pilat , approx. 110 m).
history
In the 1970s, Lacanau began to become a popular seaside resort. At first the place consisted of simple and sometimes quite large French coastal houses. Meanwhile some concrete structures can also be found. Life in the village is much more influenced by tourism than at the beginning. The place has also expanded inland.
