Matthias Zender

Matthias Zender (born April 20, 1907 in Niederweis , † December 20, 1993 in Bonn ) was a German folklorist .

life and career

Zender was drafted into the Wehrmacht on May 20, 1940, and on April 1, 1941, he was appointed War Administrator in Arlon (Belgium).

He was director of the folklore seminar and head of department for Rhenish folklore and professor at the Institute for historical regional studies of the Rhineland at the University of Bonn . Here he joined the Catholic student union WKSt.V. in 1927. Unitas-Salia at. His research focus was the veneration of saints in Germany. After 1945, the answer sheets for the Atlas of German Folklore were evaluated under the direction of Zender . From 1965 to 1975 he was editor of the Rhenish Yearbook for Folklore , and at times he worked with Heinrich Dittmaier on the Rhenish Dictionary . In 1975 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .
