The Rheinisches Jahrbuch für Volkskunde is published by HL Cox , the chairman of the Rheinische Vereinigung für Volkskunde Bonn. The editorship is closely tied to the chair of the Folklore Department of the University of Bonn (today's Department of Folklore / Cultural Anthropology). The first editor and founder of the scientific journal in 1950 was Karl Meisen , followed in 1965 by Matthias Zender . In 1975 HL Cox took over the editor, followed by Helmut Fischer in 2010.

The yearbook is published every two years; a total of 39 volumes are available so far. Since the beginning of the 1990s, these have mainly been themed volumes. The yearbook covers classic folklore topics such as custom research , storytelling , women's studies, dying and death, clothing and disguise, cultural boundaries and national identity, popular piety or aspects of religious culture. Five supplements on selected topics have also been published at irregular intervals.
