Château Cos Labory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Château Cos Labory is one of the smaller wineries in Bordeaux with 18 hectares of vineyards. Since the classification of 1855 , the winery has been classified as "Cinquième Grand Cru Classé ", the fifth estate in the classification.

It is located in Saint-Estèphe in the south, right on the municipal border with Pauillac , and opposite the former sister estate Château Cos d'Estournel , on the "Route du Vin", the departmental road no. 2. The goods were separated in 1789 as a result of the French Revolution.

With 18 hectares of vineyards, the estate is one of the small estates of the first-class Médoc-Châteaux. The areas are planted with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon , 35% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc . After a maceration of 18 to 25 days, the wines mature in barriques for about 15 months . The barriques are replaced by 30 to 50% annually. Malolactic fermentation has been carried out in wooden barrels since the early 1990s .

The word Cos is derived from the district of Caux . Caux means hill made of pebbles in Gascony . In fact, the estate has around three hectares on a gravel hill that extends from Château Lafite-Rothschild to Cos Labory.

The second wine from Château Cos Labory is called Le Charme Labory .

History of the winery

The vineyards of Cos Labory were only detached from Château Cos d'Estournel in 1789 during the French Revolution. The first owner after the division was François Labory, who gave the estate its name. In 1845 Louis-Gaspard Estournel bought the Cos Labory back, but had to sell it again seven years later.

His real estate deals, the extensive construction activity and the expensive costs of winemaking on Estournel had made him fall deeper and deeper into debt. At the end of his long life, impoverished and completely in debt, he had to hand over the property to his banker friend. However, he was allowed to stay in the vicinity of his beloved vineyards.

Cos Labory has been owned by the Audoy family since 1958. The winery is managed by Bernard Audoy.
