from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Château Grand-Puy-Ducasse is a winery in the Pauillac appellation near Bordeaux . Château Grand-Puy-Ducasse is also the name of the red wine that is produced on this estate. The château was rated in 1855 as one of eighteen Cinquièmes Crus Classés (Fifth Plant) in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 . The château has a total of 50 hectares, of which 38.66 hectares are planted with vines.

history

The winery was founded in the 18th century . Pierre Ducasse, at that time one of the largest landowners in Pauillac, acquired part of the scattered vineyards from his grandfather Artigues Arnaud in the 18th century and expanded the property. The property was named "Ducasse-Grand-Puy-Artigues-Arnaud". The part of the name Grand-Puy (Great Mountain) refers to a district within the municipality of Pauillac. The château was then long owned by the Cordier-Mestrezat wine trading group. Due to financial problems, this company had to sell all of its wineries to the Crédit Agricole investment group in 2004 .

Vineyards

While the old château was built on the quay of Pauillac, the 38 hectare vineyards of Château Grand-Puy-Ducasse are spread out in three different places. The northern vineyards are in the immediate vicinity of Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Lafite-Rothschild , the western areas are in the Grand-Puy district and the southern areas are in the Batailley district. The vineyards are planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot . Typically for this region, the soil consists of deep gravel on a limestone base.

The wine

Chateau Grand-Puy-Ducasse produces around 10,000–12,000 cases of wine (12 bottles of 0.75 liters each) in an average year. The fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel containers, then the wine is poured into barriques .

The second wine of the Château is called Prélude à Grand-Puy-Ducasse .
