Château Nairac

The winery Chateau Nairac is located near the Route nationale 113 in the town of Barsac in the Gironde department in the region of Aquitaine in France . It was classified as "Deuxième Cru Classé" in the Bordeaux classification in 1855. The château is located relatively low, near the Garonne , which can flood the site when the tide occurs, which was the case in 1981.

On 17 hectares of vineyards (other sources name 16 or 15 hectares) 90% Semillion , 6% Sauvignon Blanc and 4% Muscadelle are grown and aged for three years in 100% new oak barrels . The result is a noble sweet wine with a long shelf life that is typical of the Sauternes area . A second wine is not known.

history

The building can be dated to the year 1777, but the origins of viticulture go back to the middle of the 17th century under André Duranceau. After several changes of ownership, Élysée Nairac acquired the property; the chateau built immediately afterwards has existed in this form to this day (2014).

Nairac's two unmarried daughters continued to run the property until the 1840s. Bernard Capdeville, also the owner of Château Broustet , was the next owner until his death in 1861. Broustet and Nairac were then managed separately.

There were a number of changes of ownership after 1861, and neglect threatened to ruin the château. The vines were replanted after frost damage in February 1956.

In 1971, Nairac was acquired by a young American couple named Heeter, and Château Giscours is owned by the wife's family. The vineyard and cellar technology were modernized at great expense . The oenologist Émile Peynaud was on hand as a consultant. Since then the oak barrels have been renewed every year.

In 1986 the marriage was divorced and the management was taken over by his son Nicolas Tari-Heeter.

The vintages 1798 and 1811 are listed as outstanding in the Château's archive. Little Johnson 2010 lists the 1997, 2002 and 2004 vintages as "preferred to enjoy."
