The Château Talbot is a French winery in the Bordeaux wine-growing region . Since the classification of 1855 , the winery has been classified as Quatrième Grand Cru Classé (fourth level of classification). It is in the Saint-Julien appellation . The average age of the vines is 30 years. In the middle years the estate produces around 300,000 bottles of wine .

history

The origin of the name Talbot is not certain. One theory is that it goes back to John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury , who was also a Connétable of France . However, his possession cannot be proven. A second interpretation is also possible, which indicates that Talabot is a common French proper name. In the Medoc dialect, this refers to a piece of wood that was used in the harness of oxen to slow them down. In the 18th century the estate was still called Talbot d'Aux , which suggests its owner, the Marquis d'Aux de Lescout. In 1917 the wine merchant Desiré Cordier, who already owned several well-known goods in Bordeaux, bought the winery. The Cordier family still owns Château Talbot today. It has been run by Nancy Bignon-Cordier and her husband Jean-Paul Bignon since 2011.

location

Talbot's undivided location of the domain extends over the gravel knolls in the further bank area of the Gironde , which were first cultivated from 1750. The 138 hectares of the estate, 107 hectares of which are planted with vines, is located in the north-western district of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle , north of Château Gruaud-Larose and northeast of Château Lagrange . On the eastern side, towards the Gironde, is the Château Léoville-Barton . Talbot is one of the great Bordeaux wineries. 67% of the area is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon , 27% with Merlot , 4% with Petit Verdot and 2% with Cabernet Franc . 5 hectares are reserved for white wine.

The wine

The average age of the vines is 30 years. After handpicking , sorting and destemming twice , it is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels for 15 to 21 days. After the assemblage , the wine is aged in up to 40% new oak barrels for 18 months. A gentle filtration takes place , but no fining . Among the Talbot vintages, the red wines of 2010 (94  PP ), 1986 (96 PP) and 1982 (95 PP) stand out. However, all wines from the well-known good Bordeaux years also came out very well on Talbot (e.g. 2014, 2012, 2005, 2000, 1996, 1990, 1986).

The second wine from Château Talbot is called Connétable de Talbot and comes from younger vines from different locations. From the varietals Sauvignon Blanc (84%) and Semillon (16%) is a white wine with the name Caillou Blanc du Château Talbot generated.
