Barsac (wine region)
The Barsac wine-growing region is located in the vicinity of the French commune Barsac in the Gironde department on the orographic left side of the Garonne . The area is located about 30 km southeast of Bordeaux . The approximately 605 hectare area has had the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée since September 11, 1936 .
Barsac is part of the supra-regional wine-growing region of Bordeaux .
On the loamy limestone soil, sweet white wines similar to those in the Sauternes appellation are produced from the Sémillon grape variety . In addition to Sémillon, the Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grape varieties are also permitted.
Barsac is near the confluence of the Garonne and the small river Ciron . In autumn, the different water temperatures of the rivers create fog, which promotes the development of noble rot through Botrytis cinerea . All appellation wines produced in Barsac also have the right to be marketed as Sauternes. It is said that the wines from Barsac are a little lighter because the terrain is less steep.

Barsac is almost an enclave within the Graves wine region . Most of the winegrowers in Barsac market both dry white wines from the Graves appellation and sweet wines.
