The Château Climens winery is located in the municipality of Barsac , part of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée Barsac in the Bordeaux wine-growing region . In the Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 , it was classified as "Premier Cru Classé". The estate has 30 hectares of vineyards.

The Sémillon grape variety is the only one planted. This choice is very unusual because in the Barsac and Sauternes region , Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle are usually added to the Sémillon . The mean age of the vines is 35 years (as of 2007) and the planting density is 6,600 vines / hectare. The harvest is carried out by hand in several harvest aisles in order to select the noble rotten berries. The wine matures in barriques for 20–24 months , 35 to 45% of which are renewed annually. Every year around 25,000–30,000 bottles are marketed on average over a period of twenty years. The yield restriction for Grand Vin is a very low 7 hl / ha. The estate has been owned by Bérénice Lurton since 1993.

The second wine of the estate is called Cyprès de Climens .

history

The first written mention of the estate can be found in a contract from 1547, which names the public prosecutor Guirault Roborel as heir of the lands of today's Château Climens. A connection to Jean Climens, whose existence in Barsac was traced back to 1462, has not yet been established. Guirault planted the first vineyards and the family expanded their name to Roborel (or Roboureille) de Climens.

In 1800 Jean Bineaud acquired Château Climens from the Roborel de Climens family. The purchase agreement named a vineyard area of 27 hectares, which were spread over 3 plots. In the documents of the Bordeaux wine classification of 1855, Eloi Lacoste was named as the owner at that time. In 1871 the estate went to Alfred Ribet, who had to sell it to the publisher Henri Gounouillhou 14 years later at the height of the phylloxera disaster. Henri Gounouillhou was already the owner of Château Doisy-Dubroca when he married Miss Dubroca in 1880 .

Under the leadership of the Gounouillhou family, Château Climens was qualitatively number two in the region after Château d'Yquem for many years .

Lucien Lurton bought the winery in 1971. His daughter Berenise runs it today. At the turn of the millennium, she converted the estate to biodynamics.
