from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietrich II (* before 1065; † December 30, 1115 ) from the House of Châtenois had been Duke of Upper Lorraine , Count in Alsace Valley and Vogt of Remiremont since 1070 . He was the eldest son of Duke Gerhard of Upper Lorraine and Hedwig of Namur.

Life

Dietrich's brother Gerhard also claimed the title of duke. The disputes between the brothers ended in 1073 with a peace treaty in which Gerhard already bears the title of Count of Vaudémont .

Dietrich was on the side of King Henry IV , for whom he fought against the Saxons, especially in 1075 in the battle of Homburg an der Unstrut .

In 1078 he and Heinrich conquered the fortress of Metz , whose bishop Hermann had sided with Pope Gregory VII . In the period that followed, Dietrich intervened several times in matters of the expelled bishop, who then excommunicated him , which the Pope then confirmed in early 1079. When the bishop returned to Metz in 1082 , Dietrich could not prevent this; It was not until two years later, in 1084, that Henry IV himself succeeded in subjugating the city again, which, however, did not last.

His first marriage was Hedwig von Formbach , daughter of Friedrich von Formbach and Gertrud von Haldensleben , probably widow of Count Heinrich, widow of Gebhard von Süpplingenburg († 1075 in the Battle of Homburg an der Unstrut ), Count in the Harzgau .

In his second marriage he married Gertrud von Flanders, a daughter of Count Robert the Friesian .
