Hermann von Metz (* before 1049 ; † May 4, 1090 ) was Bishop of Metz from 1073 to 1090 .

Life

Hermann came from a side line of the family of the Counts of Ardenne . His nephew was Heinrich von Verdun (1076-1091 Bishop of Liège ). Hermann was cathedral prope of the Lambertus cathedral in Liège . After the death of Adalberus III. on November 13, 1072 he became the new bishop of Metz in early 1073 at the latest. On August 25, 1076, at the beginning of the investiture controversy , Hermann received a much-quoted, church-historically significant letter from Gregory VII , in which the Pope detailed his decision to excommunicate King Henry IV .

Hermann died on May 4, 1090 and was buried in the Saint-Pierre-aux-Images church in Metz , but this structure was completely demolished in the middle of the 18th century.
