Simon I (Lorraine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simon I (around 1076; † January 13/14, 1139 ) was Duke of Lorraine from 1115 to 1139. He was the son of Duke Dietrich II ( House Châtenois ) and Hedwig von Formbach , thus half-brother of Emperor Lothar III . († 1137).

In 1115 he succeeded his father as duke. In 1122 he accompanied Emperor Heinrich V in the Worms Concordat , which put an end to the investiture dispute . Within the duchy he came into conflict with Stephan von Bar, Bishop of Metz from 1120, and Albero von Montreuil , Archbishop of Trier from 1131, two allies of the Count of Bar . The archbishop excommunicated him, which Pope Innocent II reversed.

Duke Simon I was one of Bernhard von Clairvaux's friends . He founded several abbeys, including the Stürzelbronn Abbey in 1135 , in which he was also reburied after he was first buried in Saint-Dié .

He married Adelheid († 1158), whose filiation is not certain. Some see her as the daughter of Heinrich III. , Count von Löwen , and Gertrud von Flandern (who married Simon's father Dietrich II.), Others as the daughter of Gerhard von Süpplingenburg , Count von Querfurt, and Hedwig von Formbach , which in turn means that she is the aunt her husband would have been.
