The monastery Clairlieu ( Latin clarus locus , brighter place) is a Cistercian -Abtei in French Meurthe-et-Moselle . It is located southwest of the municipality of Villers-lès-Nancy near Nancy .

history

Clairlieu was founded in 1150 by Count Gérard II of Vaudémont in 1151 by Matthew I , Duke of Lorraine , † May 13, 1176 , and his wife Berthe. The monks came from Bithaine Monastery , a subsidiary of Morimond Primary Abbey . The number of monks was never much more than a dozen. The monastery was destroyed in the wars of the 17th century, but existed until 1790. Between 1980 and 1990 excavations were carried out by the Direction des Antiquités Historiques de Lorraine. The location of the buildings was marked in the ground.

Duke Matthew I was buried in Clairlieu, as was his wife, the Staufer Bertha (Judith), † 1194/95, eldest sister of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa .

The monastery had the Grangien Gimées (today Gimeys), Nouveau-Lieu, Hagnévillers, Bédon and La Foret.
