Amanda Meta Marshall (born August 29, 1972 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian pop musician.

Career

Amanda is the only child of Doug and Gencie Marshall and grew up in a multiethnic family as their mother is from Trinidad. Her musical talent became apparent at an early age, which is why her parents enrolled her in a special teaching program at the Conservatory in Toronto at the age of three. There she received piano and classical singing lessons. Despite a great talent for classical music, Amanda Marshall soon switched to jazz singing. In 1990 she met guitarist Jeff Healey at one of his concerts in Toronto, who encouraged her to take part in an open concert where he accompanied her on guitar. Convinced of her talent, Healey invited the completely unknown teenager as the lead singer for his upcoming tour. Within a few weeks, Amanda Marshall put together her first band and then accompanied Healey and later Tom Cochrane .

In 1991 Columbia Records offered her a recording deal, which Marshall turned down. It was not until 1994 that she accepted the offer from Sony Records and presented her first singles in 1995, which was followed by the debut album Amanda Marshall at the end of the year . With Let it Rain and Birmingham you immediately hit international top ten hits. Within a year she even received a diamond record for the album in her native Canada for over a million records sold . Stylistically, the work was to be settled in alternative rock .

In 1999 her second album, Tuesday's Child , was released, which was not quite as successful, but still gave her a sold-out Canada and European tour. On her third album, Everybody's Got a Story , which was released in 2001, Marshall expanded her style to include elements of R&B , pop , but also rock .
