List of the Margraves of the Nordmark

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nordmark was formed in 965 after the death of Margrave Gero . It essentially comprised the area of the later Mark Brandenburg between the Elbe and the Oder.

In 983 the area was lost to the Holy Roman Empire after the Slav uprising . It was ruled by the Slavic Hevellers and various rulers. The title of margrave was further awarded, but had no real dominion as a basis.

It was not until Albrecht the Bear who conquered Brandenburg in 1150 that German rule was created in what would later become the Mark Brandenburg.
