Lothar (Nordmark)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lothar III. von Walbeck (* around 940 ; † January 25, 1003 in Cologne ) was Count of Walbeck from 964 to 1003 and Margrave of the Nordmark from 993 to 1003 . He was the eldest son of Count Lothar II von Walbeck and Mathilde von Arneburg, daughter of Count Bruno von Arneburg.

Lothar followed his father in all rights and possessions after his death in 964 and has appeared as Margrave of Nordmark since 993. After the Slav uprising, the North Mark was only a small area in the west of the former area. Lothar first appeared in 979 when he and his brother Siegfried were entrusted with the supervision of Geros von Alsleben . After the death of his mother and his brother Siegfried in 991, he refused his sister-in-law and his nephew their inheritance claims, but had to give in and surrender their inheritance shares.

Lothar significantly increased the power of the Walbeck family. As a margrave he took part in an unsuccessful campaign led by Margrave Ekkehard I of Meissen against the Liutizen in 993 . He later came into conflict with Ekkehard because of his attitude towards the marriage of his son Werner with Ekkehard's daughter Luitgard. He was therefore in the 1002 area code for King Ekkehard's most determined opponent. He first supported Duke Hermann II of Swabia, but then recognized King Heinrich II , who confirmed him in all of his offices and rights. Possibly Lothar animated the Counts of Northeim and von Katlenburg to murder Ekkehard I.

Lothar probably died after drinking a poisonous drink or from alcohol poisoning in Cologne.
