Dietrich II of Münster

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietrich II of Münster (* around 1084; † February 28, 1127 at Windberg Castle ) was Bishop of Münster from 1118 .

Life

His father was Hermann von Formbach and Windberg , his mother the Countess Mathilde von Reinhausen . Countess Mathilde married a Bavarian count and gave birth to Hermann von Winzenburg, this is how the first abbot Reinhard of the Reinhausen monastery reported in 1153/1156 about the establishment of the monastery and the family of the founders.

From 1110 he was canon at the Münster Cathedral, from 1118 a deacon.

Hermann (I) von Winzenburg was his brother, and as a prize for his apostasy from the imperial party, Dietrich was raised to the bishopric of Münster. When Bishop Burchard von Münster died in 1118 on his return journey from Constantinople, Duke Lothar von Supplinburg was able to get his cousin Dietrich through. In the same year his henchman Udo von Stade took his political opponent Hermann I. von Werl prisoner.

At the end of 1119, Emperor Heinrich V drove Dietrich out of Münster with the imperial-minded citizenry. In 1120 Duke Lothar appeared as an enemy of the king.

Hermann and Lothar moved against Münster in the winter of 1120/21 with the support of Hermann I von Radelnberg Count von Winzenburg, from 1122 Count von Reinhausen and Otto and Gottfried von Cappenberg . After looting and cremation, which also completely burned the St. Paulus Cathedral , the city fell on February 2, 1121. Dietrich returned to Münster as bishop, where he remained in office until his death.
