geography

Obernberg am Inn lies at an altitude of 354 m in the Innviertel. The extension is from north to south 2.6 km, from west to east 2.3 km. The total area is 2.3 km². 8.7% of the area is forested, 47.8% of the area is used for agriculture.

history

First documented mention around 950 AD under the rule of the Counts of Vornbach as "Oprenberg". Towards the end of the 12th century Obernberg came under the rule of the Passau bishops and later formed an enclave in the otherwise Bavarian Innviertel . Bishop Wolfger (coat of arms) had the market square and the castle square laid out in 1199. In 1276 the place received market rights from the Roman-German King Rudolf von Habsburg . Ship tolls and handicrafts made the place rich. In 1550, Bishop Wolfger's old castle complex was replaced by a castle under Bishop Wolfgang von Salm . Several fires devastated the place in the 17th century, but the splendid Baroque successor buildings formed the basis of the beauty of the place.

After the Treaty of Teschen in 1779, the surrounding Innviertel (then 'Innbaiern') became part of Austria, and in 1782 Bishop Leopold Ernst von Passau Obernberg ceded to Austria. During the Napoleonic Wars, the fortifications of the castle grounds and the tower were largely demolished (1807) and Obernberg was briefly Bavarian, but since 1816 it has finally belonged to Upper Austria. In the middle of the 19th century, trade shifted away from shipping and rafting to the railroad. The economic decline was the result.

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.

Until 2005 Obernberg am Inn was the seat of a district court and the center of the judicial district Obernberg am Inn see also: Burg Obernberg

Population development

In 1991 the community had 1,759 inhabitants. Since the birth balance was very negative until 2001 (−116), the population decreased to 1,703 people despite immigration. The birth rate continued to decline until 2011 (−259), so that the population fell to 1,448.

Culture and sights

  • Obernberger Marktplatz: The Obernberg marketplace with its Rococo stucco facades of the Schiffsmeister- (near Gurtentor), apothecary and Wörndle house by the Bavarian artist Johann Baptist Modler is worthwhile .
  • Heimathaus im Gurtentor: was founded in 1927 at the suggestion of the chairman of the Beautification Association, Josef Lang, and opened in 1931. After the end of the war and repair of a supporting beam damaged by an American crane truck, the house was expanded to 9 rooms in 1946. In 1980/81 there was a complete redesign and expansion to 10 showrooms.
  • Kunsthaus: An art house was opened in the castle area and in the newly designed gardens, theater events are held from time to time on the Egglfing and Obernberg am Inn stages .
  • Parish church Obernberg am Inn : The parish church was added to the “Gottleichnamskapelle” (body of Christ chapel, today presbytery) in 1447 , so it is the only Catholic church in Austria to have the title “For Holy Communion”. The Gothic wood carving "Anna Selbdritt" and the Anna chapel with Gothic frescoes attached to the tower and nave (not freely accessible, incompletely uncovered) are remarkable . Altar figures on the pulpit and the triumphal arch come from the Schwanthaler 's workshop.
  • Nikolauskirche: In the Nikolauskirche in Vormarkt Ufer (Schifferkirche) the boatmen were once said goodbye to their dangerous onward journey. Now the church is used as an exhibition and concert space and for special services (St. Nicholas mass).
