history

Markt Aurolzmünster after a copper engraving by Michael Wening from (1721)

In the 8th century, a hermit named Cotto lived in the Antesna cell , which stood on the floor of today's Aurolzmünster market. He donated this cell with 10  Huben in the time of Duke Tassilo III. (748–788) the Benedictine monastery Niederaltaich. Around 790 this cell is listed in Breviarius Urolfi as the original property of the Niederaltaich monastery . Abbot Urolf settled the monastery with a few monks and built a church in honor of St. Build Mauritius . The original monastery was destroyed by the Hungarian invasions (954).

This branch was first called Münster . In order to distinguish it from other monastic settlements, the name Urolf was added. The current name Aurolzmünster was formed from this combination of words. In fact, only Minsta is spoken locally in the local dialect , which shows how long the original name has been preserved.

After the Hungarian storms , the Diocese of Passau enfeoffed the county of Hals with the seat of Aurolzmünster. The oldest written mention of Aurolzmünster is from 1130, when the place was still called Urolfismunstiure . During the rule of the Tannberger , Aurolzmünster was raised to the market. The place appears as a market for the first time in 1406.

During the Thirty Years War , the plague raged in Aurolzmünster, as a result of which the population was severely decimated. During this period from 1618 to 1648 the construction of the Sebastianikirche and the plague cemetery including the plague chapel also fell. The restored plague chapel on the Hunnenschlachtfeld still reminds of this time.

Since the founding of the Duchy of Bavaria , the place was Bavarian until 1779. The population of Aurolzmünster originally belonged to the Diocese of Passau. Only after the Peace of Teschen did the community with the Innviertel (then Innbaiern ) become part of Austria . During the Napoleonic Wars , Aurolzmünster briefly became Bavarian again .

From 1816 the place came to Upper Austria.

After connecting Austria to the German Reich on 13 March 1938, the place to belong Upper Danube . In 1945 Upper Austria was restored.

population

In the Middle Ages and early modern times , Aurolzmünster was only a small place with a few hundred inhabitants. The population grew only slowly and fell again and again due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. Only with the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century did population growth accelerate. While around 1,000 people lived in the village in 1805, there were already 1,628 in 1869. Even after that, the population continued to grow. In 1951 Aurolzmünster had 2,304 inhabitants.

Of these, 4.0% had the largest share of Turkish citizens.

religion

The foothills of the Alps have been historically Catholic for centuries since Christianization , which is why the Roman Catholic Church is also strongly represented in Aurolzmünster. Aurolzmünster Castle

Moated castle

In the middle of the market town is the Aurolzmünster moated castle , also known as the “Innviertel Versailles”. Count Ferdinand Franz Albrecht von der Wahl had the castle built between 1691 and 1711. It was completed by the architect Johann Kaspar Zucalli and Antonio Riva . Count Ferdinand von der Wahl did not see the completion of the magnificent building. He died in 1702.

After several changes of ownership, it was robbed of many treasures in the 1920s by Count Anton von Arco auf Valley . In 1925 it was bought by the retired postmaster and private scholar Carl Schapeller, who built laboratories surrounded by deep moats on both sides . Due to the constant change of ownership, the castle gradually fell into ruin . Extensive renovation work (from 1997 to 2005) brought the castle back to its former glory.

A foreclosure auction of 1.34 million euros at the end of September 2019 broke because no bidder appeared.

Parish church Aurolzmünster

Parish church of Aurolzmünster

The parish church, a single-nave, four-bay nave, was built in the Gothic style, as indicated by the presbytery , the Gothic vault, the stone portal and the door fittings. It was built by Abbot Urolf von Niederaltaich around 799 and, like the sacred building of the mother monastery, consecrated to St. Mauritius .

The tower on the south side had a pointed roof before the fire in 1672, later an octagonal tower and a simple dome above it . In 1718 the onion helmet was applied. The baroque style and the associated redesign of the church took place from 1729 to 1735.

The church is equipped with an altarpiece by Michelangelo Unterberger (1695–1753) from South Tyrol . It shows St. Mauritius, a Roman soldier who died for his belief. The high altar and the figural and ornamental stuccos come from the plasterer Josef Ignaz Holzinger . The crucifixion group on the tabernacle made by the famous baroque sculptor Johann Franz Schwanthaler is remarkable . There are frescos by Georg Helminger and Leander Danegger on the ceiling of the hall . The choir shows St. Mauritius with a view of Aurolzmünster and the coronation of Mary , the birth of Christ and the handing over of the keys to Peter . Scenes from the life of Jesus can be seen in the vaulted areas.

275 years after the renovation in the baroque style, a three-year comprehensive, professional interior renovation began . In 2011 the roof structure and the vault were provided with iron girders. In 2012 the floor and the lighting were renovated. Furthermore, the columns and frescoes were restored and the valuable stained glass windows were reinforced. The renovation costs amounted to more than 1.3 million euros.

Maria Aich Chapel

Maria Aich Chapel

There are a large number of wayside shrines and chapels in the municipality . Maria Aich is the oldest and probably the most interesting chapel in the Aurolzmünster parish, around which there are also some legends. The chapel was built in 1744 by the Austrian Count Paul Karl III. Engelbert Graf von Pálffy, kk general, built around an old hollow oak. Why the general built a chapel on the road from Ried to Schärding is probably due to the accident he had suffered at this point. According to one story, he was thrown from his shy horse and dragged. He had this chapel built in gratitude for his rescue.

The community colors are white-red-white-blue.

Combination of emblems of former owners of the Hofmark Aurolzmünster: in front the doubled rafter beam from a coat of arms of the Tannbergers, who held fiefdoms for 300 years and were able to acquire market rights for Aurolzmünster early on; In the back, the interlaced double pusicans from the coat of arms of the Bavarian Counts von der Wahl, who were Lords of Aurolzmünster from 1676 until their extinction in the male line (1797) and whose Ferdinand Franz Xaver had the current palace built between 1691 and 1711. - With the award of the coat of arms by the state government, the previously used letter coat of arms, which has only been handed down in seal use, was replaced by a heraldically flawless, historically based solution. - The municipality colors indicate contrary to the present as well as the former affiliation of the market to Upper Austria or before 1779 to Bavaria.
