Johann Georg Schwanthaler

Johann Georg Schwanthaler (born February 16, 1740 in Aurolzmünster , † September 23, 1810 in Gmunden ) was an Austrian sculptor .

Johann Georg Schwanthaler was born as the son of the sculptor Franz Mathias Schwanthaler (1714–1782). He initially trained as a sculptor with his father, then in Ried im Innkreis with his grandfather Johann Franz (1683–1762) and his uncle Johann Peter the Elder (1720–1795).

The Wels sculptor Ignaz Mähl employed him as a journeyman . In 1765 he married his daughter Maria Anna and moved to Gmunden, where he ran his own sculpture workshop.

Schwanthaler primarily created reliefs. Many of them are now in the collections of the Schlierbach and Kremsmünster monasteries and in the treasury of the Holy Chapel in Altötting . The multi-figure church cribs from Altmünster and Kematen an der Krems and the statues of the 4 church fathers in the choir of the parish church of St. Martin in Kematen on the Krems .

Schwanthaler and his wife had four children: Franz Carl (* 1770), Maria Juliana (* 1771), Franz Xaver (* 1772/73) and Johann Carl (* 1774). After the death of his father, Franz Xaver continued to run the Gmunden sculpture workshop, but he was unable to continue his father's artistic achievements.
