Population development

The municipality of Kematen an der Krems recorded hardly any population movement between the late 19th century and 1939, although the population development up to 1934 hardly differed from that in the federal state of Upper Austria or in the Linz-Land district. While the growth rates in the province of Upper Austria increased more rapidly and in the district extraordinarily strongly, the population of Kematen continued to stagnate. Between 1869 and 1971 the population had only increased by 9 percent, while the population of Upper Austria had increased by almost 70 percent during this time and the number of inhabitants in the district had almost tripled. It was not until the 1970s that a steady population increase developed in Kematen, which in the 190s and 1980s was almost exclusively due to a strongly positive birth balance. While the positive birth balance increased in the 1990s, Kematen also benefited for the first time from a massive increase in immigration. The community benefited from its favorable location in the city triangle of Linz, Wels and Steyr. The positive birth and migration balance has persisted since the turn of the millennium.

politics

Municipal council

The municipal council as the highest body of the municipality has 25 seats and is elected every six years in the course of Upper Austria-wide municipal council elections. The community board consists of seven members, with the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) having four members since 2009, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) two members and the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) one member. The strongest force in community politics between 1973 and 1985 was the SPÖ, which in each case achieved an absolute majority in mandate and in two out of three elections with results between 48.1 and 53.8 percent also won an absolute majority of votes. During this time, the ÖVP took second place with results between 38.4 and 47.3 percent, the FPÖ moved into the municipal council in 1979 with 7.9 percent, after not standing as a candidate in 1973. As early as 1985, however, it failed to return to the municipal council with 4.7 percent. After the FPÖ was able to gain 14.1 percent in the 1991 municipal council election, primarily at the expense of the SPÖ, the ÖVP managed to overtake the SPÖ for the first time with 44.5 percent, which only reached 41.5 percent. In the 1997 election, the ÖVP and FPÖ were ultimately able to gain at the expense of the SPÖ. Thanks to the heavy losses suffered by the FPÖ, the SPÖ took first place again in the 2003 municipal council election with 49.1 percent, while the ÖVP and FPÖ came in at 41.6 and 9.2 percent respectively. However, the SPÖ was unable to maintain its election result and lost first place to the ÖVP in 2009. The ÖVP was able to achieve 55.9 percent of the votes with a landslide victory in 2009 and achieved an absolute majority of votes and mandates for the first time with 14 mandates. The SPÖ posted its worst result to date with 31.9 percent and had eight seats, while the FPÖ achieved 12.2 percent or two seats.

mayor

The mayor has been determined by direct election since 1997 , with no absolute majority for a candidate in a runoff election . Analogous to the changing election results, the claim to the mayor also recently switched between the SPÖ and the ÖVP. While the ÖVP candidate was able to prevail in 1997 with 53.0 percent, the SPÖ candidate won in 2003 with 51.9 percent. In 2009 Günter Seidler (ÖVP) prevailed with 71.0 percent. The Vice Mayor is also provided by the ÖVP.

Other options

Despite the good results in municipal council elections, the SPÖ was never able to take first place in state elections. This was always achieved by the ÖVP with results between 46.2 and 55.6. The SPÖ always came second with results between 23.9 and 44.1 percent, the FPÖ achieved 3.7 to 16.3 percent with one exception third place. In 2003 the FPÖ was overtaken by the Greens. In the last state election in 2009, the ÖVP was again first with 49.3 percent, while the SPÖ posted its worst result to date with 23.9 percent. With 14.4 percent, the FPÖ was slightly below their best result to date, while the Greens were able to get their best result with 8.4 percent.

Coat of arms at kematen an der krems.png

The municipality of Kematen an der Krems was awarded the municipal coat of arms by resolution of the Upper Austrian provincial government on October 16, 1978. The blazon reads: “Divided by a silver wavy bar; Above, in green, a golden Roman helmet, underlaid with a silver sword placed at an angle to the left with a golden hilt; below in red a golden horn with silver fittings and a golden ribbon. ”The design of the municipal coat of arms comes from Herbert Baumer, whereby the comb helmet and the sword refer to Roman times. Kematen was on the ancient road from Steyr to Wels and the name of the community is derived from Latin (domus caminata = house with a fireplace). In addition, a Roman settlement of Kematen is documented and the attributes of the Roman soldier also point to the parish patronage of St. Martin. The wavy band in the middle of the coat of arms refers to the river Krems, the hunting horn below, in turn, to the two castles in the municipality. In addition to the Achleitners, Hans Raidt, lord of Weyer Castle in the 16th century, also used a horn in the coat of arms.

The municipality colors of Kematen are red-white-green.
