With 28,929 inhabitants, Leonding is the fourth largest city in Upper Austria . In the north it borders with the Danube on Puchenau , in the east on Linz , in the south on Traun and in the west on Pasching and Wilhering . Leonding belongs to the political district of Linz-Land , the responsible judicial district is the judicial district of Traun .

Until the first half of the 20th century, with around 5,000 inhabitants, it was largely rural, and the strong population growth that has continued to this day led to a major upswing. In 1975 Leonding was elevated to the status of a city, and since 2011 Leonding has been the largest city in the district . Today Leonding is the 15th largest city in Austria .

Today the city is best known as the headquarters of several large industrial companies and as a green, partly still rural residential area on the outskirts of the city of Linz. Together with its neighboring communities, Leonding is part of the second largest metropolitan area in the Republic of Austria .

While the name of the city in Leonding is usually stressed on the first syllable ([ ˈleːɔ̯nd̥iŋ ]), in the rest of Austria the emphasis is usually on the o ([ leˈɔnd̥iŋ ]).

geography

Leonding is located 287 meters above sea level in the central area . The extension is 5.8 kilometers from north to south and 7.4 kilometers from west to east. history

Pre-Christian time

A from the time 5000 BC. Chr. ( New Stone Age ) derived settlement site with 34 pits of at least two different phases with linear tape ceramics of the older New Stone Age and clay vessels and vascular shards from the middle Jungsteinzeit (Paschinger road) was found. In addition, a body grave ( Leondine ) from the Middle Neolithic, over 6,300 years old, with four beautiful clay vessels and other additions was discovered.

Litter finds (old finds) from the area of several Leondingen old towns, many of them on hills and in the Kürnberger Forest, are dated to the Neolithic Age.

Various finds from the Bronze Age were made in several Leondingen old towns, they were particularly productive in Berg, Alharting and Gaumberg as well as in the "Reingrub" in the Kürnberger Wald ( barrows ). A deposit was found in the Dörnbacher Wald, there are also indications of a partial settlement of the Kürnberg.

The remains of an early settlement were also uncovered in the center of Leonding ( late Bronze Age / early Hallstatt period ceramics), dating from 1300 to 800 BC. Is dated.

middle Ages

In 1013 Leonding is mentioned for the first time as Liutmuntinga . The name can be traced back to the personal name Liutmunt . In the following centuries there were repeated shifts in sound: Liutmuntinga first became Leuwentingen , then Leuntingen and Lantyng . Finally, in 1667, Londing first appeared .

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns . In the following centuries, Leonding or the Kürnberger Forest was the scene of large hunts, for example by Maximilian I from 1500. In 1686, Emperor Leopold I organized a deer hunt in the Kürnberger Forest with Count Khevenhüller in the presence of more than 1000 people .

Modern times

During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times. Among other things, 1,500 French occupied the place in 1800 and demanded food and quarters for years.

One of the preserved towers of the Linz Tower Fortification

Experience in the coalition wars gave rise to the construction of a fortification, the construction of which began in 1831 as the Linz Tower Fortification . Nine of the originally 27 towers were located in the municipality of Leondingen. Today four of the Leondingen towers are still preserved and serve as living and working space.

In 1850 the first Leondingen municipal administration was constituted. The first mayors were almost without exception respected farmers and estate owners.

From 1858 the Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Bahn , today's Westbahn , was built by Leonding, but a stop was not set up in Leonding until 1881. The Linz local railway followed in 1911 .

From 1898 to 1905, Adolf Hitler lived with his parents in Leonding as a child. His parents' house still exists today and is currently home to the city's funeral home. The parents, who died in 1903 and 1907 respectively, are buried at the Leondingen cemetery . The grave was abandoned in 2012, however, as it became more and more a meeting place for neo-Nazis.

First republic

The establishment of the 1st Republic and the creation of democratic conditions meant a great change for Leonding. If between 1850 and 1919, with one exception, all mayors came from the peasant class, the elections in 1919 brought about major changes: the workers made up a majority in the local council and a social democratic railroad worker was elected mayor.

"A new era begins, in which everything has changed profoundly, in which Leonding's tranquil village life comes to an end, a time that many had to deal with first and which for some was more difficult than the world war itself."

- Josef A. Kauer, Leondingen chronicler

The following years were marked by tension and political battles between the two camps. In 1922, Christian Socialists, Greater Germans, and the Freedom and Order Party allied and forced new elections, where they were inferior to the Social Democrats in terms of votes as a bourgeois unified list , but were able to achieve an equal number of seats in the local council. The lot decided that Alfons Wagenhofer, the owner of Schloss Rufling at the time , became the new mayor. In 1924 the situation was repeated, again the Social Democrats were in front of the single list. Again the lot decided for the bourgeois mayor. In 1926 the situation relaxed and it was agreed that Karl Schrattenholzer, a moderate social democrat, would be the new mayor, who then won a clear victory in the last free municipal council elections of the 1st Republic in 1929.

Austrofascism

Due to its location on the outskirts of Linz, Leonding also played a certain role in the Austrian civil war . While fierce fighting was raging in Linz on February 12, 1934, hundreds of Schutzbund members in Leonding prepared to intervene in the fighting. The plan was to attack the ammunition depots in Hart and in the 13 tower together with other fighters from Traun and Nettingsdorf. Due to the rapid suppression of the fighting in Linz, there was hardly any fighting in Leonding, but 37 Social Democrats were arrested.

As a result, the democratically elected council and the social democratic mayor were deposed. A so-called corporate congregation day, to which tradespeople, farmers, teachers and pastors belonged, took the place of the municipal council. The Leondingen farmer Franz Bäck became mayor of the Fatherland Front .

time of the nationalsocialism

The house in which Hitler lived from 1900

On the day after Austria's annexation , Hitler visited Leonding, his parents' grave and his former home. Shortly afterwards the village square was renamed Adolf-Hitler-Platz . In the following months, the incorporation of Leonding, together with other communities such as Traun and Pasching , into a new Greater Linz was intensively prepared. However, the implementation was postponed due to the war, only the 1.5 square kilometer Keferfeld district was incorporated on October 1, 1939. During the war, around 700 bombs fell on Leonding in 22 US / English air raids. On May 5, 1945, three days before the end of the war, there was still fighting in Leonding: US tanks that had captured Hörsching Airport the day before were stopped by guns stationed at Buchberg and Freinberg. The weeks after the war were marked by a myriad of refugees, unorganized Wehrmacht soldiers and former concentration camp prisoners who roamed Linz and Leonding. In the search for food there were repeated looting and theft.

post war period

While there was a strict building ban in Leonding between 1938 and 1945 - it is assumed that Leonding should remain an "unadulterated" Hitler pilgrimage site - living space was urgently needed after the war. The population in the Doppl-Hart district alone rose from 500 to 3,000 between 1945 and 1958; the situation in other districts was similar. The total population of Leonding increased by a third between 1951 and 1957 alone.

In the decades that followed, Leonding was repeatedly included in Linz's urban development plans. Leonding was called the Linz supplementary area and city zone of influence , but incorporation into the then economically weak and financially poor Leonding was strictly rejected. In the 1960s, Leonding attracted people with cheap building land and lax building regulations, which meant that many companies from Linz settled in Leonding. At least since the city elevation of Leonding in 1975, there have been no more serious plans on the part of Linz city politicians to incorporate Leonding.

High-rise buildings on the Harter Plateau the day before the demolition

In the early 1970s, GIWOG, VOEST's own housing cooperative, began planning and building several large housing projects in the then sparsely populated district of Hart . Overall, a completely new district with living space for 20,000 to 30,000 people was to be created. Due to strong criticism, partly also due to bad planning - there was a lack of shops and a tram connection, for example - and not least due to the international steel crisis in 1985, the will and the financial means for further construction were ultimately lacking. In 2003, the two high-rise buildings on the Harter Plateau, which were built from 1972 to 1974 and were recently very dilapidated, were blown up with great interest from the population and the media. After the demolition, new, lower residential complexes were built on the former site of the high-rise buildings.

In the 1990s, the lack of housing and space in Linz became more and more striking. The state capital lost around 20,000 inhabitants within 10 years, which meant that more housing was being planned and built again in Leonding. The new Leondingen town hall was opened in 2003, and in 2007 the expansion of the tram to Hart was officially sealed. The line was opened in August 2011 after two years of construction. As a result of the brisk construction activity in Hart and Haag in recent years, the population of the “new” southern districts has now exceeded that in “Old” and “North Leonding”.

population

Population development

Overview

Leonding had around 2,000 inhabitants in 1810 and 3,829 at the turn of the century, by 1945 6,131 people were registered. But it was only after 1945 that the enormous population growth began. How much this influx caused the congregation to create, especially after the end of the war, can be seen both from the minutes of this time and from the congregation chronicle. Within 30 years the population increased from 6,131 to 19,100 people. The cause of this population explosion is on the one hand that many expellees found their new home in Leonding, on the other hand also that more and more people who work in the industrial conurbation of Linz are settling in Leonding. It is also noteworthy that this population growth has continued unchecked to date. In 2008, Leonding overtook the neighboring town of Traun in terms of population and has been the fourth largest town in Upper Austria since then. Since 2013 Leonding has been the fifteenth largest city in Austria. The population of Leonding is currently growing by around 400 people per year, with the growth being largely restricted to the southern districts such as Hart and Haag . In addition, a “Masterplan Leonding” is currently being drawn up, which will revitalize the center of Leonding and better connect the center in the north of the city with the populous districts in the south.

Population level and structure

In the 2011 survey, the proportion of residents who were 65 years of age and older was 17.2%; 15.5% were under 15 years old. The population of Leonding is therefore much younger than that of Linz (19.4% over 65-year-olds, 13.2% under 15-year-olds). The proportion of the female population was 51.9%.

With an academic quota of 17.4%, Leonding is well above the overall Upper Austrian quota of 9.6%. Only Wilhering has a higher proportion of academics in the population in the Linz-Land district .

In 2011, the proportion of people from Leondingen with foreign citizenship was 10.2%. The largest group of foreigners comes from Germany (12.1% of the foreign population).

The municipal council and mayoral elections take place every six years together with the state elections. In the first municipal council election in 1945, the SPÖ achieved an absolute majority. Since then, the SPÖ has consistently held the majority in the local council.

The 2015 municipal council election with a voter turnout of 76.02% produced the following result:

Local council and city council

The Leondingen municipal council consists of 37 members. The council, elected from the ranks of the local councils, consists of 9 people including the mayor and the 3 deputy mayors.

mayor

Mayor of the city of Leonding is Sabine Naderer-Jelinek (SPÖ), who took over the office on February 20, 2019 from her predecessor Walter Brunner on an interim basis and was elected mayor on May 26, 2019.

In the 2015 direct mayor election, Brunner received 44% in the first ballot and 65% in the runoff election. Deputy Mayors are Michael Täubel (FPÖ) and Franz Bäck (ÖVP). Since 1997 the mayor has been directly elected by the people.

City finances

In 2014, the city of Leonding planned with revenues of 57 million euros. The largest sources of income were the income shares from the financial equalization with 26.8 million euros and the municipal tax with 14.3 million euros. Expenditure was planned at around 54 million euros, with the largest single item at 19 million euros again being financial compensation. Expensive individual projects in 2014 are the construction or renovation of several kindergartens, general road construction and the construction of the tram. With a per capita debt of 629 euros, Leonding is one of the least indebted communities in Upper Austria.

coat of arms

In silver a red, erect, gold-armored griffin.

The standing griffin was borrowed from the coat of arms of the Painherren (landlords and landowners in Holzheim and Leonding). The coat of arms was awarded by the state of Upper Austria on January 27, 1969. The city colors are red and yellow. On October 27, 1975, Leonding was officially elevated to the city.

Economy and Infrastructure

UN shopping

As of October 31, 2011, the 1,838 workplaces in Leonding employed 11,676 people. Five workplaces have more than 250 employees each, 9 workplaces each employ between 100 and 250 people.

In Leonding there is one of the largest shopping centers in Austria, UNO Shopping , which is currently almost completely empty. Founded in 1990, it was no longer able to defend itself against strong competition from the immediately neighboring Plus City in Pasching from the mid-2000s , and almost all tenants gradually left the center. After years of vacancy, a decision should be made in mid-2015 to continue using it as a shopping center.

Established businesses

Rosenbauer headquarters in Leonding

Many well-known and internationally successful commercial enterprises are located in Leonding, for example Ebner industrial furnace construction , Rosenbauer fire fighting vehicles and fire fighting equipment, Banner batteries and Poloplast . The headquarters of bellaflora , the largest Austrian garden center chain, and the headquarters of the regional television broadcaster LinzLand TV are also located in Leonding.

tourism

In 2014 a total of 32,929 overnight stays were recorded in the city, the average length of stay was just under 2 days. The number of overnight stays rose slightly (2013: 32,738). 17,827 of the overnight stays were spent by residents and 15,102 by foreign guests. Most of the domestic guests came from Vienna (3,159), most of them from Germany (8,865).

There are 4 hotels and several smaller guesthouses available as accommodation. Most of the hotels are conveniently located close to Linz in terms of transport.

traffic

Leonding train station

The Mühlkreisautobahn A7 and the Kremstal Straße B139 cross in Leonding . The latter runs for several kilometers in the Leondingen urban area between Pasching and Linz, where increasingly severe traffic problems arose in the 1990s. Growing commercial areas along the route and, last but not least, the three large shopping centers in the south of Linz ( PlusCity in Pasching, Haid Center in Ansfelden and UNO Shopping in Leonding) ensured a sharp increase in car traffic. Only with the construction of the tram to Leonding and the bypass between UNO Shopping and PlusCity has the situation eased more and more in recent years.

The Linz Airport is located just a few kilometers from Leonding away in Hörsching .

Rail connection

Tram line 3 in the Hart district

Leonding station is on the western railway line . The ÖBB is currently planning an above-ground expansion of the double-track line to 4 tracks, which is, however, rejected by the municipal policy. This calls for an underground expansion, as damage from noise and the threat of fragmentation of the municipality are feared. After lengthy discussions, the municipality and ÖBB agreed in April 2015 to suspend the process until after the election in September 2015.

There are also six LILO stops in Leonding (Untergaumberg, Leonding Lokalbahn, Straßfeld, Bergham, Am Dürrweg, Rufling).

Local public transport

Public transport in Leonding is operated by Linz AG lines. In August 2011, the extension of tram line 3 , which leads from Linz main station to the Harter Plateau to the provisional end point Doblerholz, was opened. At the end of February 2016, the route was extended to the Traun intersection. In autumn 2016, tram line 4 was introduced, which, in addition to the line 3 route, also runs the new section between Trauner Kreuzung and Traun Castle .

In addition to the tram, three regular (11, 17, 19) and three district lines (107, 191 and 192) run by Linz AG through the Leonding urban area.

education

HTL Leonding

The HTL Leonding is located on the Harter Plateau and offers training in electronics , IT and organization , biomedicine and, since 2014, media technology . In 2016, almost 900 students attended the HTL Leonding. The HTLs in Traun and Perg go back to expositions of the HTL Leonding.

The following schools are also located in Leonding:

There is also a regional music school in Leonding.

Culture and sights

Buildings and places

The Leondingen town square at Christmas time

The central square of Leonding is the approximately 5,000 m² square in the center of the city. In the early 2000s, the Leondingen town hall and thus the town square were completely redesigned. Before that, the city administration was housed in a functional building from the 1950s. Today the town square is mainly characterized by some historical buildings such as the Leondingen parish church , the 44er Haus , but also newer buildings such as the town hall. The municipal council hall, which protrudes into the town square with a glass facade, is particularly striking. Also part of the town hall is the so-called town hall atrium , which serves as an event hall and, in winter, as a location for the farmers' market.

In the south of Leonding is the Kürnberghalle, which can accommodate up to 1,000 visitors. It is mainly used for cabaret events and concerts.

Tower 12

In the hilly north of Leonding, the four preserved Leondingen towers of the Linz tower fortification are visible from afar . While the Leonding City Museum is located in tower 9 today , apartments were set up in tower 10 and tower 12. Tower 13 is now owned by the municipality and was partially renovated in 2000 in order to preserve it as a cultural monument.

There are two preserved castles in Leonding: Schloss Holzheim , sometimes also called Painherrnhof, is located in the north of the city. It was first mentioned in 1075 and was rebuilt in 1726 after a fire. The current coat of arms of Leonding goes back to the Painherren. Today the well-preserved castle serves as a residential building. The second surviving castle is Rufling Castle in the west of Leonding. It was mentioned for the first time in 791, the current form dates from the second half of the 19th century. Today it is also used for residential purposes. A third preserved castle was Bergham Castle , which, however, had to be demolished in 2011 due to its dilapidation.
