Michael Gitlbauer

Michael Gitlbauer (born September 3, 1847 in Leonding , † May 31, 1903 in Vienna ) was an Austrian classical philologist .

Life

Michael Gitlbauer was the son of a blacksmith in Leonding. He attended a grammar school in Linz while he continued to live in Leonding. In 1865 he entered the St. Florian's Priory of Augustinian canons and studied at whose house educational institution theology . He was ordained a priest in 1870 .

Gitlbauer then worked as an assistant priest in Ried near Mauthausen until 1872 . He then worked as custodian of the Münzkabinett of St. Florian Monastery, where he also taught moral theology at times . From 1873 he studied classical philology at the University of Vienna , which he completed with a doctorate in 1876 . Together with two other young Viennese doctors, Adolf Bauer and Richard von Kralik , he spent two semesters from October 1876 at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin to take part in seminars by Theodor Mommsen .

At the instigation of the classical philologist Wilhelm von Hartel , Michael Gitlbauer became a private lecturer in philology at the University of Vienna in 1877 . There he was appointed Associate Professor of Classical Philology in 1879 and then, in 1901, Full Professor. He headed the university's philological seminar . Gitlbauer's most important scientific achievement was the deciphering of the ancient Greek tachygraphy (shorthand). He worked for the literature and art section of the Christian scholars' association Leogesellschaft as chairman, archivist and historiographer and was a member of the Austrian Numismatic Society . He wrote for years for the Roman Catholic-oriented daily Das Vaterland and was also active as a pastor in the Viennese parish church of St. Othmar under the white tanners .

Michael Gitlbauer died at the age of 55 and was buried in the cemetery of St. Florian Monastery. Gitlbauergasse in Vienna- Leopoldau was named after him in 1954 .
